Newport Day Sail

The afternoon breeze in Newport is no accident. This is when the sailing is at its best, and the harbor is at its most alive.

THE EXPERIENCE

The Best Wind of the Day Is in the Afternoon

Newport’s prevailing Southwesterly sea breeze follows a pattern so consistent that locals have kept time by it for generations. It starts  light in the morning, builds through late morning into the afternoon, and moderates again toward sunset. It is one of the reasons Newport is the sailing capital of the world, and it is exactly why our afternoon Day Sails offer something the morning and evening departures simply cannot.

When the sails fill on a Newport Day Sail, you feel it. The boat heels slightly, the bow cuts through the chop, and the harbor opens up around you in a way that is hard to describe until you have been on the water to see it. This is not a cocktail cruise. This is Newport sailing the way it was meant to be experienced.

Day Sails run aboard all three of our vessels: the Aquidneck, the Sightsailer, and the Starlight. Whether you are a group of 40 or a couple looking for a private afternoon on the water, there is a boat and a departure that fits. Check the schedule for current availability and book in advance. Day Sails sell out regularly, particularly on summer weekends.

Newport Day Sail Highlights

Real Sailing Conditions

The afternoon breeze on Narragansett Bay is the most consistent wind of the day. Guests feel the difference the moment the sails go up and the boat gets moving.

Newport's Full Coastline

Sail through Newport Harbor and out along the shore toward Ocean Drive, taking in the Pell Bridge, Fort Adams, Clingstone, Hammersmith Farm, and the kind of coastline that has attracted sailors and racers for over a century.

Hands-On or Hands-Off

Help raise the sails, take a turn at the wheel, or settle in and let the crew handle everything. No sailing experience is required, and both approaches are equally welcome aboard.

What to Expect on a Newport Day Sail

All Day Sails take place in the protected waters of Narragansett Bay, which means queasiness is rarely a concern even for guests who have never been on a sailboat. Your captain and crew provide relaxed, informal commentary about the sights, the history, and the harbor throughout the sail. There is no script and no forced tour-guide energy, just people who know these waters well and enjoy sharing what they know.

No sailing experience is required. Children are welcome aboard all public Day Sail departures, and they count toward the total capacity, so include them when booking.

Daysails on Aquidneck are approximately 1 3/4 hours, Sightsailer daysails on Sightsailer are 1 1/2 hours, and daysails on Starlight are two hours.

Day Sails are available aboard the Aquidneck, the Sightsailer, and the Starlight. Each vessel accommodates a different group size and offers a slightly different experience on the water. Check the schedule to see what is running on your date.

The Discover Sailing cruise runs aboard the Sightsailer on select days and is designed for guests who want a more hands-on introduction to sailing. The crew walks you through the basics and encourages participation throughout. No experience is needed.

Not at all. Every sail is led by an experienced captain and crew who handle all aspects of sailing. Guests are invited to participate as much or as little as they like.

Children over the age of 6 are welcome on Aquidneck.  Children over the age of 10 are welcome on Sightsailer and Starlight.

All sails depart from Bowen’s Wharf, 32 Bowens Wharf, Newport, Rhode Island, in the heart of the historic waterfront.

Yes. Day Sails sell out regularly during peak season, especially on weekends. We recommend booking as soon as your dates are confirmed.
