RAGGED ISLAND SAILS & ALES
Welcome aboard Aquidneck for our Tuesday Sails & Ales Sail with Rhode Island’s original and Aquidneck Island’s very own microbrewery Ragged Island Brewing! This sail is on select Tuesdays during July and August.
We run this cruise like all of our other sails, although the sightseeing may be a little bit more casual. Still, the crew will point out the highlights of the bay including historic landmarks while the good folks from Ragged Island Brewery will be pouring a variety of small samples* of their beers and providing a description of each. And there often is some assorted swag to take home!
Ragged Island Brewery is Aquidneck Island’s newest, craft beer microbrewery and the only one in Portsmouth, which is the northernmost town on Aquidneck Island.
Rather than offer a Newport beer cruise with beer from Texas, we felt it fitting to give a local brewery a chance to showcase their latest offerings and strut their stuff.
We can tell you first hand that the captains and crew have sampled a lot of Ragged Island beer and they’re all great! The captains and crew often wish they could just be guests on this sail; it’s so nice! On a sunny day, there’s nothing better than sailing in Newport and admiring the sights while sipping a cool beer!
If you feel like doing some exploring before or after your sail, Ragged Island Brewery is located just up the road in Portsmouth, about a 15-minute car ride from Newport. There you’ll find their brewery which is open for tours and feels as much like a New England farm, as a brewery!
If you’d like to continue exploring, head up the road another five minutes and you’ll be in the picturesque town of Bristol, Rhode Island. Bristol is home to the oldest Fourth Of July Parade in the country and it’s where you can visit the Herreshoff Marine Museum which is a must-see if you’re a fan of the America’s Cup and all things sailing.
On the way back from Ragged Island Brewing you could check out Green Animals, which is the northernmost topiary garden in the U.S. It’s a garden full of bushes, shrubs, and hedges that are pruned into shapes like bears, giraffes, elephants, and rabbits.
If you had more than your fair share of brews at Ragged Island’s brewery tour, you’ll start to guess at all sorts of animal shapes that you think you see in the gardens. Owned and operated by the Newport Mansions, it’s a totally different experience and a nice outdoor excursion.
And if you like the idea of brewery tours, why not make the circle complete and visit a few local wineries for a tour and wine tastings? Although we’d rather have you come back and join us for a Sunset Sail there are several good wineries on Aquidneck Island and nearby including Newport Vineyards, Greenvale Vineyards, Sakonnet Vineyards, and Westport Rivers.
Whether you’ve never set foot on a sailboat, or are an old salt, Sightsailing’s sailing tours in Newport are legendary, enjoyable and fun for all!
Sail Newport, see Newport and sample Aquidneck Island’s finest brews with Ragged Island Brewing and Sightsailing!
*Please do note that these sails are not considered booze cruises, with unlimited, overflowing, sloshing mugs and people stumbling about. We aim to create an upscale, calm and relaxing experience for all to enjoy.
